Labours Brexit Plans Sir Keir Starmer Says He Will Seek A Major Rewrite Of The Deal

Labour's Brexit plans: Sir Keir Starmer says he will seek a major rewrite of the deal

The Labour leader has ruled out rejoining the EU but says he will not accept a 'bad deal' from Brussels

Sir Keir Starmer has said he will seek a major rewrite of Britain's Brexit deal in 2025 if the Labour party wins the next general election.

The Labour leader said he would trigger Article 16 of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement to begin negotiations on a new deal that would "protect jobs, the economy and our relationship with Ireland".

"The current deal is not working," Starmer said. "It has damaged our economy, our security and our relationship with our European neighbours. We need to fix it."

Starmer's plan was met with mixed reactions. Some welcomed the prospect of a new Brexit deal, while others said it was unrealistic to expect the EU to renegotiate the existing agreement.

The European Union has said it is open to discussing changes to the Brexit deal, but only if they are "in the best interests of both sides".

The UK is due to leave the EU on 31 January 2020.
