EU Extends Sanctions on Venezuela for One Year

Response to Ongoing Political and Economic Crisis

The Council of the European Union has extended its sanctions regime against Venezuela for one year, until 14 November 2021. This decision was made in light of the ongoing political and economic crisis in the country.

The EU's restrictive measures on Venezuela, imposed since November 2017, were put in place in response to the continuing deterioration of democracy and the rule of law. They include an arms embargo, travel bans on certain individuals, and the freezing of assets.

The EU's relationship with Venezuela is framed by the New Agenda for EU-Latin America and Caribbean Relations, which emphasizes the importance of promoting democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The EU has repeatedly called on the Venezuelan government to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the opposition to find a peaceful solution to the crisis.
